Magpie 2 upgrade
Magpie software was first released in 1997 and has been upgraded to Magpie 2. Magpie 2 is a significant step up from Magpie 1 however existing Magpie users will upgrade comfortably to Magpie 2 without needing to re-learn how to use the software.
Magpie 2 functions in the same manner as Magpie 1. The data logger is unloaded the same way, Magpie offers tabular and graphical display of the unloaded data in the same way however all of these standard functions offer improvements in Magpie 2 which make it an easier, more user friendly and more functional software package than Magpie 1.
The following describes some of the areas where Magpie 2 offers improvements...
Table
Tables in Magpie 2 can now...
- Allow summaries of data to 'Min', 'Ave', 'Max' or 'Sum',
- Allow the user to enter comments on selected data,
- Allow channels to be hidden from the table display,
- Allow table columns to be rearranged for preferred viewing,
- Allow for user defined time and date formatting to be used,
- Save all table settings as a favourite for easy recall later,
- Print table data with a meaningful layout,
- Export table data directly to HTML for posting to a web site,
- Allow for column titles to be modified
Graph
Graphs in Magpie 2 can now...
- Allow the user to actively zoom in on data of interest
- Display a graph cursor with dynamic axis indicators
- Provide significantly easier axis controls
- Allow colour bands for the display of regions of interest
- Allow comments to be added and displayed on selected series
- Allow the graph image to be saved to JPG or BMP file formats
- Have user defined colour schemes applied
- Be displayed in a monochrome mode for outdoor viewing
- Have grid lines displayed for selected axes
- Have an unlimited number of series displayed
Data Navigation
The Data Navigator in Magpie 2 has been moved up onto the toolbar to eliminate the need to move it out of the way as happened in Magpie 1. The new Navigator also allows Navigation settings to be saved as favourites so that a favourite date and time selection can be labelled and recalled easily at a later date.
Validation
The Magpie scheme can define rules for each sensor fitted to the scheme. These rules define operational limits of data recorded from that sensor. During the unloading process, if data produces an exception to any of these rules, Magpie will log a validation error message indicating the sensor, the time, the value and a recommendation (if any).
On completion of the unload, Magpie will show a list of validation errors that the user may scan through and acknowledge or delete as needed. The user will then be able to take some action as a result of the Magpie recommendation.
Integrated Scheme Editing
Magpie 2 now includes a fully integrated and graphically driven scheme editor which allows complete access to all scheme details in a logical, form based editor.
Magpie 2 offers a sensor library with a wide range of instruments designed for use with the Unidata logger.
The Scheme Editor has three categories of scheme pages available for -
- Operation - settings that modify the operation of the configured system.
- Configuration - details that go together to build a working scheme
- Advanced - details that allow advanced users to fully customise the operation of the data logger program.
