Delta-T Scan measures root length and root surface area, and counts root tips. It can also produce root length versus diameter distributions.

Despite their importance, root measurements have often been omitted from plant science experiments because of the difficulty of obtaining and analysing samples. Delta-T SCAN and the Delta-T Root Washer have made this a less daunting task. Delta-T SCAN uses a customised, splash protected flat-bed scanner to provide high resolution root analyses quickly and conveniently. The resolution and viewed area offered by Delta-T SCAN surpasses systems based on a video camera.
The Delta-T SCAN software includes the following functions:
- Root length with a choice of 3 overlap corrections
- Root length, surface area and volume per unit volume of soil
- Root length versus diameter distributions
- Root tip count and location
In addition, Delta-T SCAN has general purpose image analysis functions such as shape and size analysis, direct measurements from maps and photos of known scale, counting of overlapping seeds and small objects, soil particle size distribution, sorting by standard sieve mesh sizes and leaf area measurements.
