About MEA

MEA was founded in 1984 by its current Engineering Director, Andrew Skinner. Following a stint in Papua New Guinea and Canada, Andrew spent some time touring the globe before starting a family back in home town Adelaide.

The History of MEA

In the early 1980's, interest in alternative energy was at a high - it promptly dipped only to emerge nearly 20 years on - and Andrew took a punt on starting a business to pursue his passion: environmental monitoring. This led to him being awarded a SENRAC grant to work on the SA Wind Energy Survey, which ran from 1984-1987. His Masters Thesis which resulted from this work is still relevant in the wind energy sector today. Some of the significant wind turbine installations in SA are now on sites identified by Andrew.

What is MEA?

MEA was formed in 1984 to design and manufacture remote environmental monitoring systems including...

Automatic Weather Stations

which measure climate conditions for use in agriculture, research, education, wind energy surveys, pollution management and environmental policing.

Soil Moisture Monitoring Systems

which provide critical irrigation and crop management information to agriculture.

Water Quality and Flow Systems

which provide key information for the management of water distribution systems, river systems and waste water.

Custom Designed Systems

In addition to the standard product line, MEA designs and manufactures specialised measurement systems to suit specific projects, from customised weather stations which record detailed temperature gradients in domestic water supply reservoirs to complex soil moisture and climate sensor systems used in plant research. At the centre of all MEA logging products is our easy to use Magpie software.

Why choose MEA?

Flexibility

The key to MEA Environmental Monitoring Systems is flexibility.

Flexibility of system design: The project determines what parameters need to be measured and to what accuracy. The project determines which sensors are to be used and because MEA is not a sensor manufacturer, we are not limited to promoting our own product range. Our engineers have the skills and experience to meet all the design aspects of the most challenging projects, from electronic integration to installation hardware and software configuration.

Flexibility of communication: Download to a PC on site, remove the data logger, use a GSM or CDMA digital phone, satellite phone or radio link.

Flexibility of support: After any monitoring system has been installed, it requires ongoing maintenence. Sensors need to be recalibrated, software upgraded and occasional problems resolved. MEA offers a highly trained technical support department along with scheduled maintenence agreements to ensure systems run reliably for many years.

Fully Tested "Turn-key" Systems

MEA's experience in building measurement systems sells itself. We deliver out-of-the-box solutions that are pre-assembled, tested and ready for use.

Quality

MEA will always recommend the use of high quality instrumentation in our systems. This is the only way that MEA can make statements with confidence about the long term reliability of the system.

Cheaper, low quality alternatives are available upon client request. However given our years of experience with a wide range of instrumentation, we will be able to show clearly where the selection of lower quality equipment has cost the customer dearly in terms of loss of data and time. As such, we will always recommend the use of higher quality equipment.
